First performed at Edinburgh Fringe, Scotland, 2018, “Dulce” as it’s affectionately called by the Polymorph partners, saw the arrival of Emilie Maybank, the first choice of actor to play Ellen and later a full partner in Polymorph Theatre.
Tommy is a veteran of the Great War. Wounded at the battle of the Somme, a member of the famous “Accrington Pals”, and invalided out of the army, he returned not to his native Lancashire but to London and a solitary life as a factory engineer, his nerves permanently rattled by his experiences.
Ellen, an American nurse with the Red Cross, is fearful for her fiance who was embarked to Crete shortly before the German airborne attack on the island. She knows only that he is “Missing in Action”.
The two characters meet when Ellen invites Tommy into her shelter as an air raid begins. They begin to swap stories and find an incredible connection stretching back to Tommy’s home town.
Two strangers, two World Wars. One incredible connection in hope.
