A young woman dies alone and by her own hand in a dingy room in a Northern town. The Inspector arrives to investigate the death, and, intrigued by the circumstances, he begins to search out the reason – or reasons – for this poor woman’s lonely death. The Inspector knows what has happened, but is determined to find out why it has happened.
The themes from Priestley’s play are as relevant today as they were then. Polymorph Theatre, as usual, takes a sideways glance at a well known story – the story of the rich and the poor, the powerful and the oppressed, the privileged and the downtrodden – and looks for the hidden amongst the known.
